Long-distance flying during pregnancy may seem worrying. However, with the right preparation and information, this journey can be safe and comfortable. We have been guiding pregnant mothers flying to Miami for years and want to share our experiences with you.
The second trimester of pregnancy, weeks 14-28, is the most ideal period for flying. During this period, nausea and fatigue decrease and your energy level is high. However, if you are going to give birth in Miami, it is recommended to go between weeks 28-32. This leaves enough time until birth and you can have your final check-ups in Miami. After week 36, most airlines do not accept pregnant passengers or require a doctor's report.
Be sure to consult your doctor before flying and get travel approval. Your doctor will evaluate the course of your pregnancy and tell you whether flying is safe. Flying may not be recommended in case of high-risk pregnancy. Carry your doctor's report with you, the airline may request it. The report should state your week of pregnancy and estimated due date.
Major airlines like Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa and Emirates offer special services for pregnant passengers. Prefer direct flights, connecting flights can be tiring. If you prefer business class over economy class, you will be more comfortable. Legroom is wider, seats recline and meals are of higher quality.
Choose an aisle seat so you don't disturb anyone to go to the toilet. Drink plenty of water, dehydration is dangerous during pregnancy. Avoid caffeinated beverages. Get up and walk every hour to keep blood circulation active. Wear compression socks to prevent leg swelling. Prefer comfortable clothing. Use a neck pillow and lumbar support. When the seatbelt signs are on, fasten your belt below your belly.
Take all your medical reports and ultrasound results with you. Carry your medications in your hand luggage in case your suitcase is lost. Prepare healthy snacks, the food served on the plane may not be enough. Take moisturizers and lip balm, the air on the plane is very dry.
