Breastfeeding Guide: For New Mothers

Everything you need to know about breastfeeding. Correct techniques, common problems and solutions, milk-boosting methods.

Breastfeeding is a process that strengthens the bond between mother and baby and is vital for the baby's health. However, the first days can be challenging for many mothers. We have prepared a comprehensive guide on breastfeeding for mothers who give birth in Miami.

First Breastfeeding

Try to breastfeed your baby immediately after birth. The first milk (colostrum) is very valuable, important for the immune system. Colostrum is yellowish, thick and in small amounts. The baby's stomach capacity is small, this amount is sufficient. When milk comes in, your breasts may swell and become sensitive.

Correct Breastfeeding Position

Find a comfortable position, support your back. Turn the baby towards you, tummy to tummy. The baby's head, shoulders and hips should be in the same line. Lift the baby until their mouth reaches your nipple. When the baby's mouth opens wide, put the nipple in their mouth. The baby's lower lip should be below the nipple, upper lip above. The nose should be able to breathe freely. If you feel pain, correct the position.

Breastfeeding Frequency

Newborns should be breastfed 8-12 times a day. On-demand breastfeeding is recommended, don't watch the clock. Learn your baby's hunger cues: opening mouth, sucking movements, restlessness. Crying is a late hunger cue. Each feeding can last 10-45 minutes. Breastfeed until one breast is empty, then switch to the other.

Milk-Boosting Methods

Frequent breastfeeding increases milk production. Drink plenty of water, 2-3 liters per day. Eat a balanced diet, your calorie needs increase. Foods like oats, almonds, carrots are milk-boosting. Stress reduces milk production, try to relax. Get enough sleep, rest. Using a breast pump also stimulates milk production.

Common Problems and Solutions

Nipple Cracks: Correct breastfeeding position is important. Use lanolin cream. Allow air circulation. Use breast pads.

Mastitis: Hard area in breast, fever, pain. Continue frequent breastfeeding. Apply warm compress. Consult your doctor, antibiotics may be needed.

Blocked Milk Duct: Sensitive area in breast. Breastfeed frequently, start from that breast. Massage. Take a warm shower.

Insufficient Milk: Most mothers produce enough milk. Check the baby's weight gain. Breastfeed frequently. Get support from a lactation consultant.

Breast Pump Use

A breast pump allows you to store your milk and have it given to the baby by others. Electric pumps are faster and more effective. Pump when your breastfeeding routine is established, generally after 3-4 weeks. Morning hours have the highest milk production. Store milk in sterile bottles after pumping. Can be stored at room temperature for 4 hours, in the refrigerator for 4 days, in the freezer for 6 months.

Breastfeeding and Nutrition

You should consume 500 extra calories per day. Consume foods rich in protein, calcium, iron and omega-3. Limit caffeine consumption, 1-2 cups of coffee per day is safe. Alcohol is not recommended during breastfeeding. Spicy foods may disturb some babies, observe your baby.

Lactation Consultant Support

Lactation consultants at Miami hospitals provide free support. If you are having problems with breastfeeding, definitely ask for help. Learning the correct techniques makes the process much easier.
